The Middle east is important to Western powers because of the proximity to Europe. Not because controlling it means controlling the world. After all, more than half of the world's population lives east of Iran.
Any instability in the Middle east ends up splashing into Europe one way or another, as shown by the refugee crisis in 2015 and the chain of Terror attacks after that. So the West, especially Europe, has vested interest stability, and prosperity, in the Middle East.
The big problem is that after the Iraq war and the Great Recession, the Europe and the US are all to wary for any military intervention.
You mention that the US, along with the UK and France, used the chemical attack as an excuse to get more involved in Syria. Events suggest otherwise. The attack mas nothing more than a slap on wrist on Assad. Since the start of the Syrian civil started, western leaders have made a lot of effort into Not getting involved.
