  1. Most unapproved items are the result of honest mistakes, so why can't security box them and send them as checked luggage? I think part of the reason might be an intention to get us all used to being at the mercy of authority so we'll be compliant under the police state.

  2. They might come in handy anytime. In another Now This video a woman gets on an elevator when her dog's behind her on a too-long leash. The door closes. A guy springs into action and manages to get the collar off before the dog gets strangled. A woman in the comment section said that sort of thing is why she keeps scissors in the front pocket of her purse where she can grab them quick.
