It's sick that athletes aren't allowed simply to devote themselves to their sport but are bullied and extorted into serving the press. It's deeply unhealthy that our society tolerates and enables the arrogance and entitlement of the press in this way.

@monicauribe564 Yes they are. Thank you!💙🇨🇱

@raiden031 Did you play the video? Were you listening? You keep harping on the fines but she didn't take issue with the fines. She was paying them willingly. She resigned because they were taking it a step further and threatening to suspend her. They were saying in effect that her first duty is to serve the press not the sport. It's deeply unhealthy that our sick society tolerates and enables the arrogance and entitlement of the press in this way.

@jessea5044 Ok now you're sounding a little more humane, thank you for clarifying.

@DivergentStyles "Racist?" French is an ethnicity not a race.

@ar2042 The French don't have a monopoly on insensitivity. We Americans are willing and eager to put our troops in harm's way, then kick them to the curb when they come home with PTSD.

@raiden031 "They have to enforce rules" but they also need to be intelligent enough and responsible enough to re-evaluate bad rules.

@jessea5044 It's not "the freedom of the press thing," it's the overlordship of the press. It's not just "minutes of her day," it's trauma.

@raiden031 Except you're arguably the child in the room. It's the media who live in a special little world of entitlement where the sport is second in importance and the athlete's first duty is service to the press. And they've somehow managed to garner an even more excessive amount of privilege in this sport in particular.

@raiden031 Then it's the coaches and execs who should be doing the press conferences. They're the ones with the overview; the players are focused on the game, especially the ones who are introverts like Osaka. If athletes are saddled with Q&As at all the questions should be restricted to the actual playing, that's where their expertise is, and even then it makes no sense to force that chore on the less articulate players.

@raiden031 You're tossing off the term "mental state" like it's a bad mood. What Osaka's suffering from is not an attitude it's a debilitating condition; it doesn't disable her on the court but the press conferences aren't just an irksome task, they're a matter of damage and trauma. I wouldn't take it for granted there's never been a problem with this before, it's just as possible that someone else with the same disorder didn't dare take a stand, went through the ordeal and lived with the damage without speaking out; from the execs' perspective that translates as "no problem." It also strikes me as possible that others have paid the fines and the bosses let it go at that; it's been suggested that they didn't go this far with coercive measures prior to Osaka's issue. Look, we're not going to convince each other here, we're just spinning our wheels. I'm pro-labor, you're pro-management on this, and that's that.

@raiden031 That's a mature way to deal with it and I'm glad your SAD is at a level where that approach is viable. You may have noted David's experience as he recounts it in the video was more difficult. I imagine it would be a good idea for you folks who share that disorder in varying degrees to be mutually supportive and work toward understanding the individual differences among you.

@raiden031 I hope so. And I agree with your initial post where you said she could have handled negotiations better and earlier. It's unfortunate that she apparently hadn't developed those skills enough to head off some of this trouble. I do think she did the right thing by just stepping away from the stress, and it's good that she said this step is in the best interest of the sport. I like to think she'll come back stronger.
1
@sabin97 Exactly, plus she didn't object to the fines.
