@loulfw2513 There are plenty of people out there who do think it means abolish all cops, and the right-wingers are successfully whipping up those people's fears. Maybe the majority doesn't see it that way - you and I don't - but a scared minority can keep the right wing strong enough to impede progress.

@loulfw2513 I still haven't found a word I like. I'd want it to mean briefly but clearly that the idea is to get some real cops onto the force and thugs OUT. To get the war toys out and give back the money that was looted from education and the social workers who used to take the calls that are now taken by unqualified gun-toters. Maybe "Cull the police" - no, not catchy enough..."Fix the police?" Dunno.

I agree. My whole adult life I've made an effort to speak the language of the person I'm face-to-face with. And "defund" is a prime example of linguistic tone-deafness: It conjures images of anything-goes communities where you have no one to turn to if you, your loved ones or your home are threatened. That's not what defund means but that's what it sounds like. By extension the picture it paints includes the inevitable rise of vigilantes roaming the streets interpreting law according to the leader's impulses and no alternative for the public except to organize a counter-force and get ready for shootouts in the streets.
