Or popping the destroyers into a giant magazine with a giant thumb and firing them at Japan like rifle rounds.

Shangri La was tied up in Philadelphia for many years until they towed down the Delaware River and sold her for scrap. My dad served aboard her and watched them tow her away from the New Jersey side of the river. He wasn't happy.

@freebeerfordworkers Sounds like what the Japanese navy is doing today: building carriers capable of operating F-35s and calling them "helicopter destroyers".

@simonfrederiksen104 It was based on a smart remark by FDR IIRC.

Ships in service can smell a whole lot worse at times.

That funding shell game the Navy was playing in the pre-WWI days is why the frigate Constellation is a museum ship in Baltimore today. For decades it was claimed that this ship was the original USS Constellation of Joshua Humphries fame, but anyone who knew what they were talking about could take one look at the ship's design and tell you something wasn't right with that claim. The stern is round instead of transom, for example. Turns out the Navy was playing the old shell game, asking for funds to "maintain" the previous Constellation while actually using the money to build a new ship, possibly with a few parts from the old one thrown in to make it "the same ship". In the end it got us a unique museum ship from an often overlooked time period (ca 1850), though, so no complaints from me.
