The Italian navy and the Italian airforce were not on speaking terms. The German navy struggled to get anything out of the German airforce and the Japanese airforce and navy were openly hostile to each other. Makes you wonder why they needed to involve anyone else.

@Joshua-fi4ji Your right, Joshua. I meant the army and navy. And the Samaria clans were the origin of the rivalry which went as far as the assassination of the political leaders from each clan. As a country with so little in the way of natural resources the fact that they wasted so much on duplicating everything shows what can happen when stupidity overcomes common sense You have to wonder what Japan could have achieved were it not for these rivalries and had worked together. But I suppose this is what you get when you don't have anyone prepared to say no.

@Aqua Fyre The trick is that someone, usually the government, steps on and knock heads together. The only one capable of doing that was the emperor and even when he finally stepped in to end the war there were army officers prepared to defy him.

@xsu-is7vq This is true but with the lack of independent leadership there is no one to deal with the problem.

@ottovonbismarck2443 I had to laugh at your remarks about the airforce and Germany not winning a war. Here's a thought for you. During the Franco-Prussian the French did use balloons and they lost. Whatever jinx France seems to have jinxed Germany. The Reggia Marina did have some very good officers but was to often hampered by the poor ones. They did not take up radar as early as others but their rangefinders were very good and each ship had plenty of them. The problem was quality control of the propellants. So an Italian warship could have shells exploding all around a Royal Navy ship very quickly but some shell from the same salvo dropped short while other overshot. And none hit the ship.

@ottovonbismarck2443 At that point the RAF could do with all the help they could get and the Royal Navy's task was to use their ships to deal with the invasion. So the navy pilots flying with the RAF was a better use of their skill.

@mikearmstrong8483 I hope this it was a bit quieter.

@phaasch I did read an autobiography of an RAF pilot who served between the wars. He was seconded to the navy for a time and one thing I realised from his remarks is that navy flying is not the same as airforce flying and should be left to the navy. Having said that when both the RAF and RN flew Harriers RAF pilots did fly with the RN. I would not be surprised if the same happens now with the F-35s
