I originally also thought that but part of the aim is to get in quick, hopefully without being detected, launch torpedoes, then get the hell out of there. Wiggling about while trying to aim at your target without the enemy firing back is definatelly not something you'd want to do. So being able to have some control over the torpedo is a great advantage. I have read several accounts by people who fought in MTB/PT boats and it was harder to hit a target then you might think. So being able to just point and shoot is a big advantage. A little side note I hope you may find interesting. Captain Peter Dickens, the great grandson of the author Charles Dickens, served on British Royal Navy MTBs during WW2.

I did read that the casualty rate on U-Boat crews was higher then amongst Japanese kamikaze pilots. At something like 90%.
