I watched a documentary where a pilot said that the reason you turned left because it was a natural instinct to push left rather then pull right. This applied to dog fighting as much as aborted carrier landings. The engines torque would also assist in this but that seems to have been a helpful advantage rather then anything else. Interestingly fighter pilots flying in Europe were told that if you had a Messerschmitt Bf 109 on your tail then turning right was better then turning left. The torque on the Bf 109's engine meant it did not react as quickly when turning right as Allied aircraft did.
