The British actor Micheal Hordern served in the Royal Navy and a Fighter Direction Officer, and then first lieutenant on board HMS Illustrious. Shortly after the departure of his immediate superior, he was promoted to lieutenant commander, I remember watching an interview with him and him describing the training he received for his role. It involved a number of cyclist riding around and each bicycle having a shield in front of it so the cyclist could not see where they were going. Each carried a radio and the trainee fighter direction office would use the radio to direct the cyclists so as to avoid collisions between each of them. It has been some time since I watched the interview but I seem to remember he had to sit on top of a very high step ladder or something similar so he could observe the cyclists and give them directions.
