You mentioned the speed of the Albacores being so slow that a destroyer passed them. Well this reminded me of something I read about British aircraft in the early part of WW1. They were so slow that on occasion while flying westward to return to their airfields they would be flying into a head wind which could be anything up to 10 MPH faster then they could fly. So in effect they were flying backwards. The only way they could make any headway was to tack across the wind like a sailing ship.

Apparently the on last strike the German aircraft arrived to late to attack the bombers, this despite the fact the Germans had radar set up for just such an event. It later transpired that the radar had indeed spotted the bombers and well within time to intercept them. But the operator had delayed sending the warning so as to allow the British attack to succeed. He had decided he had had enough of the Nazis and wanted them to be defeated. And this was his way of helping to ensure that defeat.
