I always thought they were designed by people who never actually saw a battleship.

Can I just point out that I do not think you are giving the French enough respect for their ships. It is difficult to fire on a ship if you keep averting your eyes or suffer bouts of hysterical laughter, which is obviously what happened everytime you saw a French warship. So maybe they are boxing clear with there designs.😊

@Dave_Sisson On more then one occasion during the Crimean War Lord Raglan, who had served in the Napoleonic War, sounded the alarm upon seeing French troops thinking they were attacking. Old habit die hard. And if Britain had not declared war on Germany in WW1 they were going to blame Britain for any defeat by the Germans. And after their defeat in WW2 they did blame Britain. Despite them being in charge. So blowing up their navy is just part of the fun. On the two hundredth anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar some senior French officers were taken around HMS Victory. On seeing some cannon balls one French officer asked if those were the ones used at the battle. A British Royal Navy officers said no you've still got those.

That's got to be confusing for the enemy. Having to report you are under attack by HMS Dreadnought. The'll probable cut his rum ration again.
