You have to wonder why the Russians did not shoot it down. Last thing you want is your lastest aircraft coming down in the west where NATO experts could check it out. There was an incident a year or two earlier where the latest Russian fighter, possibly a Mig 23, was flying along the border between East and West Germany when a US aircraft suddenly appeared out of the clouds on the West German side flying along side the Russian aircraft. The US aircraft rolled over on its side as if to fly away from the Russian aircraft. What the Russian pilot was not aware of was that the US aircraft was on a reconnaissance training mission and the reason for him rolling his aircraft on its side was so that he could use his cameras on this new Russian aircraft. Apparently the US pilot got some very detailed photographs of the Russian aircraft's cockpit. What's the Russian for "smile please."
