  1. topbreak38 Maxium range of the projectiles would be my guess. In case of a miss a pistol or shotgun would not have near the potential range of a rifle.

  2. I agree however bullets can ricochet and potentially go over backstops. Safety boards do not plan for the 99 percent of shots they plan for the 1 percent that is a fluke, a mistake, an accidental discharge etc. The unfortunate thing is that Chyt happens. No matter how good of planning has been done. When you think you have made something idiot proof nature will come up with a better idiot.
