Regarding the 'Regiment' question whose careers span across 1947 -- The earlier part of the careers was as Professional soldiers with allegiance to the British Crown (what does patriotism even mean here?). The latter part is with allegiance to the Sovereign Indian Republic. The Regiment & the individuals may celebrate both parts as proud professional soldiering careers but to one as an Indian Citizen, their first part of the career brings no joy (good for them, does nothing for me), their 2nd part is something one is intensely proud of!

The only thing 'Indian' about the British Indian Army was that the 'professional' soldiers (isn't that same as mercenary in this context?) were Indian natives... Who were doing bulk of the shooting at Jalianwalia Bagh in 1919, the white British? ...

@saichaitanyat6208 Not sure how mere deconstructing of motivations of joining the army weakens the argument or has anything to do with it - it is a wrong category selection for applying to one's argument. The point is whether pride of professional soldering can be subsumed by a higher motivation of patriotism. Your deconstruction fails to address this as each of 5 'kinds' can be patriotic. The 1st 'kind', patriotism is arguably the primary motivation and is the only 'kind' that applies. ...Regarding complexity, one tends to think that it is not so complex and can be fully resolved with carefully constructed arguments

If the Nepali Gurkhas take Indian citizenship before joining the army, then they are as Indian & patriotic as you or me but if they don't take Indian citizenship then they are professional soldiers. Let us not get confused here...
