  2. Self ideal image reinforced by societal norms & expectations is historically a well researched topic. Society is the problem, not the lack of studies and 'connections', IMHO.

It is well established that depression, GAD etc lead to eating disorders by way of food/substances used as a tool for emotional sustenance (dopamine/serotonin reward pathways) however, this is a one way relationship. Obesity does not necessarily imply mental disorders. In fact, mental disorders can express as bulimia and anorexia, quite the opposite to effect to obesity.
