@larsrons7937 - Russia might INTEND to use the T54/55 in an indirect fire role. However, a howitzer has 10 to 15 km range. The gun elevation in those old tanks is very limited. They'll probably have almost the same range in indirect fire as in direct fire. Certainly, their indirect fire range will put them in direct fire range of the much newer Western tanks. In other words, those tanks are going to be close enough to the front line and without ability to shoot over trees or buildings. So, they will be in the crosshairs of Ukrainian tanks, IFV and infantry with AT launchers.

@bwise7739 - McBeth forgot to explain the massive range difference between an artillery intended 122 or 155 mm gun that gets range by having lots of elevation (pointing the gun upwards) and the 100mm gun on the T-54/55 which has very little elevation in addition to less propellant behind the round. Practical indirect fire range of the T55 will basically have it in range of any armor Ukraine will have. It's inability to fire over obstacles will mean it will be easier to find than typical artillery and vulnerable even to infantry if the tanks aren't well supported by infantry.

It sounds exactly like Russia is preparing for a "double plus good" war. Give the people a forever war so they can demonstrate their patriotism and the factories will always need workers all wgil😢the people keeps their eyes outward on the supposed enemy instead of inside on their actual enemy. Ironically, "1984" is a popular book in Russia.
