The difference between Mariupol and Kherson, and the reason Kherson won't be bombarded into oblivion, is that Ukraine now has counter-battery radar and artillery, including HIMARS, that have longer range than the Russian artillery. An added factor is that Ukraine also has more ability to use air assets in the Kherson area that wasn't possible in Mariupol.
