i think Late Ming had potential. if it wasn't so corrupt and fighting two sides, things could have been better for the people. Late Ming did generate some notable people. Wu Youxing (1582-1652) was an expert in medicine, but was put to death by Qing. Song Yingxing (1587-1666) was a good scientist/encyclopedist, but retired after Ming fell (shaved his head when Qing came into power). Zhu Zhiyu (1600-1682) was the best Confucian scholar at the time, but plead to Japan for asylum when Qing replaced Ming, contributing to Japanese education/intellectualism. Xu Guangqi (1562-1633) was an astronomer, mathematician, and politician who converted to Christianity, working with Matteo Ricci introduced new technology and ideas to Ming, but died to illness, no one to really replace his ethusiasm after his death, as Qing was taking charge.
