Probably just lost a good amount of the libertarian-leaning conservatives too as well as a bunch of Independents. If this is simply bad advice and not just him, he needs to fire whoever gave him the advice on the spot. This is going to handicap him badly should he run in a primary- not just for 2024 but possibly for 2028 as well.

@armaniv6455 pre-2016 he had some fairly warhawkish views. Certainly not befitting of the modern GOP voter base, or for that matter most voting Independents. In politics, career politicians can change over a period of, say, fifteen or twenty years-- but they never change totally. A change this abrupt (in only six or seven) would be suspicious AF, and for good reason. Up until about 4 years ago, if you didn't live in Florida you probably didn't even know his name. That Congressional voting record is interesting including his vote for Obamacare. As for the Pardons, Trump was pretty much in powerless house arrest for the last 2 or 3 weeks of his presidency, Mitch McConnell was also holding threats over his head at that point over assange Snowden and the J6 protesters. That particular story went public in a report after Trump had left office. DeSantis actually had power to do something about lockdowns in the single state of Florida, whereas Trump would have to basically declare himself dictator and remove governors just to stop the lockdown states. He however has proven to be the most respectful president towards the idea of American federalism in decades (10a). You really need to study of the differences between the offices and the situations. If you think it's an all-powerful position you might want to think again. You set unrealistic expectations so high they were guaranteed to fail. I would like to have thought Ron DeSantis could have been a future presidential candidate I could get behind but I think I may have been wrong. He's on super thin ice with me and if he messes up again I am never going to vote for him even if he gets a candidacy. Also he needs to lose the Shapiro style neocons NOW. He needs a straight-up come out and denounce every neocon who has endorsed him (he can start with Jeb Bush). It might lose him some political allies but at least it will get rid of some of the bad taste in GOP voter mouths after this I'll timed response. Trump for all his faults has at least been benevolent, and has done his best to act like a true populist towards the GOP voter base, Independents and in his governing actions. Every fault he has had while in power has been negated by far more positives. They will never be a perfect political figure but this is about as good as one can get for this era. I don't care that he's not polished. I didn't like him at first but he grew on me a few months after it getting into office. I don't care if sometimes he talks a little more than he should and insults somebody. People like humans not political "models". He gives me an unfiltered opinion, not a polished one you would get from a career politician. I probably will not see a trump style figure again until I am 50 or 60 and I'm 30 right now. This kind of thing is exceedingly rare. Perhaps I'll never see it again in my lifetime. I'm not going to throw something out just because it's banged up a bit. And I'm certainly not going to throw something out for something that looks like it comes from the pre 2016 era at heart. The fact is every one of our enemies hates him. That is why he's trustworthy. I can either believe they all had a change of heart after a lifetime of corruption and subversion, and are genuinely trying to help me out, or they are exactly what I've always known them to be and they are angry because he is in the way and plans on doing as much as he can to hinder them. When all the corrupt hate one person, it is probably because he's not with them.

@rb98769 both have been throwing shade and I agree that Trump started it first but it's not that. Shade was thrown in this case that is the issue. It is the fact that he was so flippant about the entire thing which is it was to happened would have major political ramifications and set a precedent for political persecution. In the face of a police-state situation he couldn't seem to care less one way or the other for who is essentially a Florida citizen. This goes Way beyond simple political insults. It signals the possibility that he would just sit back and let things like this happen elsewhere so long as it did not affect him. He was far too late in condemning it. He held his press conference after is polling had fallen more than five points nationwide after about a week of ignoring it entirely. This was a massive blunder. This goes way beyond ego in this instance. He could have thrown back shade any other day, but the time he could have stood up for what was right he had stayed silent until he could stay silent no longer. If he won't do it for someone of major prominence who is being politically persecuted he sure as hell isn't going to do it for me as an average person unless it actually starts to harm him politically.

What may have started out looking like a foot in the mouth is actually starting to look almost prophetic. Some of those comments are starting to turn out true and in the last day or so DeSantis bumbled into all but confirming them. The question in so many GOP voters minds right now is: could it really be true? Perhaps he went after him because he not only saw a potential competitor but because he saw a trojan horse as well. While it bit him in the ass before it certainly isn't doing so now. That bite is turning a 180.

I would not say I dislike his fans I would just simply say I have a philosophical disagreement. Most of his fans did nothing wrong.

I'd put Lake right up there next to him as well. She will probably surpass DeSantis in quick fashion by 2028, no matter what happens at this point I think. Neocons hate her as well. Paul is still my first choice however.

Apparently everyone in DC is. Coincidentally all of those people who are also against the rule of law and above it hate this man's guts with a fearful passion. Huh. Methinks he's not against the rule of law at all. Not when I consider the people in power that hate him I can either believe the people who we all know have been corrupted with power for decades actually grew a heart immediately in 2016 and are finally doing the right thing by going after a single man to look out for my best interests, or I could believe that all these people are still absolutely corrupt and are doing what they always have done and are trying to remove an individual in the way. Which one is more likely? It's the latter of course dumbass. You've been played. However if they manage to get him in a jail cell it also sets a precedent that they all should be in it even if he's released and vindicated later on. But I bet you aren't going to be calling for them being jailed.

Apparently a lot are because DeSantis lost five points of polling across the board has Trump gained it in all but 72 hours. Their bases overlap almost completely. That gap is now at least 10 points apart and growing. He's never going to get the libertarians on board with him if hew runs against Trump at this point. Libertarians would never stood for such a thing being waved off. A part of the GOP big tent is now out of DeSantis' grasp. This was bad. At this point a Florida primary between the two would be about 50/50 with the odds Trump may actually come out on top and win the state.

Not necessarily. Even if he's not it does not remove the damage DeSantis inflicted on himself in the eyes of tens of millions. There's a good chance they drop the charges because they realize the case is weak and that it is already backfiring as we speak.

If he was DOA you wouldn't be commenting right now because it would be irrelevant. There are plenty of people who I would also vote for if Trump was not running, but none of them are backed by the neo cons. I'm in Independent so I couldn't care less. Most of them aren't worshiping at his feet, but we do have a certain amount of high respect at this point despite his flaws. You're deluded to make such a generalized statement. Like it or not the GOP voter base is 80 to 90% and approval of the maga platform among conservatives is consistently born out in polling. That platform might actually end up living longer than he does unless it is killed in the cradle. I do not think you as an individual or a rhino or a neocon just simply wrong, and for that I have ire for the powers that led you to it. Damn near no conservative voter wants to go back to the pre-2016 era. Post 2016 GOP spirit has pretty much been forged by this man. When Joe Biden called the GOP the Maga party now, he wasn't lying for once.
