  2. I don't get why the English vote for the Tories - people unlike the majority, born in to old wealth, educated at private schools and Oxbridge, work in finance, journalism or political staffers. I don't get it.

  5. @Fredrik So the elites get the masses to vote against their best interests, to vote for a party who look after corporations and the privileged, simply by appealing to their xenophobia and nativism? There must be more to it. My theory is that the English underclass, through centuries of indoctrination, actually believe the Tories are their "bettors" and are literally "born to rule", which is why they vote for them despite the Tories obvious incompetence, corruption and ideological bias to the already rich. The English masses would rather vote for the Tories than people like themselves (all the other parties) for what Freud called "the narcissism of small differences".
