@nigden1 The women of this country are FAR more likely to be attacked by a white policemen than asylum seekers. More than 150 police officers from the Met police are being prevented from holding public-facing roles because they are under investigation over allegations of sexual misconduct or racism. One in 100 police officers in England and Wales faced a criminal charge last year. You can cherry pick crimes committed by asylum seekers, but that does nothing to diminish the UK's responsibility as a global citizen to help with the international refugee problem. We are operating under legislation the UK helped devise after the Second World War.

Re: Albanians: more than half of the asylum claims lodged by Albanians are upheld: it turns out they are refugees after all. Most of those are women and children, often the victims of trafficking and exploitation. But young Albanian men, those most easily demonised, are often victims too, whether fleeing violence and blood feuds back home or abducted into a modern form of slavery once here. Consider the case of the trafficked 16-year-old boy who was locked into a cannabis farm in Leeds for three months, before he was freed in a police raid.

@Kopp203 86% of refugees and displaced peoples remain the neighbouring country from the one they fled, ie remain in developing countries. France received three times as many asylum applications as the UK last year. People stop as soon as they feel safe. But the people making their way to England and those who specifically wish to come to the UK do so because they have ties to this country, because they either served with our military, as with the case for people from Afghanistan, or have family members here or speak the language because of our colonial history, or have other ties or kinship or history here. So there are people with legitimate ties to the UK, there is no good reason why they should have their claims assessed in France if they do not wish to do so. It doesn’t work for us to say to the French that given we a geographically situated slightly to the west of you, none of these refugees are our responsibility and they are all on you, because France can say the same thing and then Italy can say the same thing and then the entire refugee protection system will crumble.

Post-Brexit the UK should be looking to increase its soft power not diminish it, especially in a geopolitical space where China and Russia are looking to increase their influence.

You must know, as an ex-police, how poor people are at knowing if someone is lying or not. The fact is we have staff shortages across multiple sectors. The Tories have increased immigration to meet those needs. We have an aging population - there is a bulge in the ageing pyramid (the baby boomers). We won't have enough young people paying taxes or to look after this aged population. The relatively few refugees we take compared to the rest of the world would help to meet this need. Immigrants pay far more in tax than they claim in benefits. It's well known that an increase in population leads to an increase in economic growth. Are you part of Truss' anti-growth coalition? As ex-police, why do you not respect the law? Human Rights legislation and the various conventions of refugees. Do you propose we break international law?

@pmarsh3700 For a most recent and nuanced view of the fiscal cost of immigration, read “The Fiscal Impact of Immigration in the UK”, from the Migration Observation at the University of Oxford dated 30/03/2022. There’s no evidence “Migrants attract low wages thus producing a lower standard of living”. Local services prioritise Adult Social Care, ie providing care, equipment and adaptations to the predominately aged white population, an aged population which is increasing. The UK – not counting small countries like Monaco, Malta, San Marino, Gibraltar etc, is behind the Netherlands and Belgium in population density, and only just above Germany & Italy. The UK’s current population growth is 0.53% per year. Given the bulge in the age pyramid, the UK’s population will decrease when the baby boomers start dying off in the decade. The UK provides less than a third of the aid Germany provides and less than 8% of what the US provides. How do you propose filling the various staff vacancies across multiple sectors in the country?
