  1. Even that Italian ad is not the originator. This was a common way to advertise the "purity" or cleaning power of soaps back in the day. There was an ad for Pear's soap featuring a white child washing a black child in the tub, and the "after" picture shows the black child has white skin from the neck down--- owing, of course, to how excellent the soap was at cleaning "impurities". Another one featured a white child addressing a black child and saying "Why doesn't your momma wash you with Fairy Soap?" Implying that the innocent child saw the other's black skin as dirty. This trope is as old as time--- but that doesn't make it okay, especially in 2016.
