. Yes he was more aware of economic and other needs than his generals. Some of his decisions were based on legitimate concerns. As the war went on he became more irrational or might I say was able to rationalize decisions that were faulty. A good example of this is his declaring many cities as fortresses which had no chance of holding out with their manpower supplies and location. Another was his constantly ordering no retreat and saying that if you retreat you will only be fighting nearer Germany. Obviously if the army is cut off an destroyed you will be fighting nearer to Germany but without the army you might have saved by retreat. He was not a madman but he did become increasingly irrational but his was in late 1944 and 1945. Clearly the German generals wanted to blame all mistakes on Hitler and give the idea if it was not for him we would not have lost the war so badly. The whole premise is wrong. It is not a question of was Hitler a madman or not. He was a calculating rational man until late in the war when his wishful thinking and his failure to accept that the Germans were inevitably losing made him ignore what would happen. That was easiest way for the generals to avoid responsibility
