  1. Hayward in his book on the Luftwaffe Stopped At Stalingrad says it was unsuitable as it was more fragile and could not deal with the various problems you mentioned and other problems.

  3. Fritz in his book Ostkrieg makes the point that logistics were inadequate for the Germans even before encirclement and there was suffering from inadequate food but noy outright starvation. p.317-18.

  4. Yes I would agree. Difficulty in the arrival of supplies at the airport might be a contributing factor but not the sole one. Both von Richtophen and Fibbig made it clear from the beginning of the airlift that they could not see how they could deliver even the minimum of supplies. The various factors weather, anti-aircraft flak the Red Airforce and other problems they were aware of were taken into consideration and these problems were even worse than they anticipated. As with most failures there were multiple reasons but it was was very quickly evident from the first few days the airlift was not going to work.

  6. No they did not but Germany did and if you sign the convention you are bound by it regardless of whether the other party signed or not.

  7. Part of the reason was the many of the Germans were near starvation and very weak and many had typhus, diseases and wounds.

  8. They would also have to build new freight cars as well as locomotives. The germans planned to conquer the USSR in 6 to 8 weeks well before the winter of 1941. It did not happoen that way.
