When the guards came to kill Pertinax, he faced them down and tried to reason with them. It almost worked, but then one guard got impatient and attacked him. He also managed to save his family from being purged by refusing to give them imperial status or titles. He was the emperor that Rome deserved, but that fact sealed his fate.

Aurelian's biggest flaw is that he would punish even the smallest mistake with execution, so when a slave made a tiny error on a record, he panicked and rallied a bunch of other soon-to-be targets to kill the emperor before he could kill them.

At least Severus deified him.

And then he was assassinated. His greatest flaw was that he shared a common character trait with Commander Red from "Dragon Ball": he always punished "failure" with execution, and he had a VERY broad definition of "failure". One of his slaves made a tiny mistake on something, then teamed up with a few senators he was planning to kill in order to get rid of him first.

I think he tried to do too much good too quickly, or at least without protection. Bringing in some of his own troops to protect him from the Praetorians just in case the latter got rowdy would likely have saved him, something Cassius Dio points out.

"...and Pertinax was deified." That made me smile.
