For a little while. Then England stopped playing around and conquered the hell out of Scotland.

@omegamcflee Yeah, it did. Under a guy called Oliver Cromwell. Then, after the monarchy was restored and the Stuarts were kicked out, the Scotts tried to put a king they thought would favor Scotland over England on the throne three times, but failed miserably. Culloden sealed Scotland's fate as being part of Great Britain.

A cameraman pointed this out. Gibson said it would be troublesome, to which the cameraman said "Aye, that's what the English thought."

@alexanderatticus647 Not entirely true. The Confederates lost the Civil War, but then wrote a bunch of "Lost Cause" crap to make themselves look good; during the Cold War, we used bought into the "clean" Wehrmacht nonsense and bashed the Red Army.

The Scots agreed and kept defacing it until it was removed.

@MegaJambo22 Independent is a strong word because, like with the Romans after Teutoburg, the English could--and did--snipe at them rather successfully over the centuries, such as the disaster at Flodden, the Rough Wooing, Cromwell's campaigns, etc.

@troystaunton254 The English Civil War ended in the 1650s. Culloden took place in 1746. The goal of the Scots was to install a Catholic king on the British throne. They failed, and the Highlander culture was brutally smashed.
