The different railway gauge in Russia was a huge problem. Every inch of track had to be laboriously converted before German rolling stock could be used.

@maciejl20 The shoddiness of planning for Barbarossa is extraordinary. The assumption seems to have been that the Red Army was so useless it would have been utterly crushed long before winter set in.

If Barbarossa wasn't an immediate success the war was lost, because the Germans would no longer be able to obtain all those Soviet natural resources they desperately needed.

They were continuously in action from May 1940 - May 1941, and definitely lost some of their edge.
