  1. A HUGE factor that keeps these expensive trucks actually affordable is resale value. Denali Sierras are phenomenal, at least in the South, in this area, especially if you buy at the right time when discounts are big. So unlike buying a $55,000 luxury sedan, or even sport utility, the depreciation cost is about like that of a mainstream car, and that is the biggest cost of ownership, especially for us cash buyers.

  2. Car journalists are notorious for abusing and dinging up the cars they're given to test. They don't pay so they don't give a flip what they do to them. Entitlement attitude. Most cars have plastic that will scratch in the cargo area.

  3. It has advantages vs the BMW 4 series, too. Bigger more comfortable seats, more cargo space, a little more elbow room, and likely much better long term reliability, with a warranty to back that up. People dump BMWs at 4 years for a reason. I have a CPO and will sell it when the 6 years is up.

  4. I have had ventilated seats in cars. If your car doesn't bake in sun for hours you probably won't need them, and if the HVAC system is working properly you won't need them after a few minutes. Nice feature, but I wouldn't toss away $1300 for them, especially as when you trade the car the dealer won't pay a dime more for them.

  8. It is over-priced, it's in Lux brand territory for roughly similar performance. But if they don't sell the discounts will be there if you time it right.

  9. Keep in mind that you can get a trailhawk 3.6L for about $30,000 if you lay off the tech option packages, ventilated seats, and get a discount off msrp.

  15. That Audi spec on cargo space is just wrong. You can obviously see that folding the rear seats adds a lot more than 14 cu ft of added space. The Volvo V60 is 43 cu ft and it is a slightly smaller interior.

  16. The price increase barely covers inflation over the time period since the last price increase. It has a better drive, handling, ride, steering feel, interior, noise levels, etc. A 3% price increase isn't out of line.

  17. I have shopped the X3 heavily but my wife hates the styling, and I'm luke warm on it. I'd test drive this XT5 as an alternative, especially in lower trim. Slap some better 20" wheels on a base model and I'd be happy at around $40K. I have a sport sedan for speed, this would be for trips, and who cares about acceleration when cruising?

  19. No, but probably 10% of those sold would be that. Go look at SRX sales. The vast majority are Luxury line, with a smattering of the others. That's a $45,000 vehicle, with discounts now availalble. It's essentially the same car. $20,000 less. That's where it makes sense and that's why it sells well. It doesn't really compete with European crossovers when loaded. They just toss those offerings in to grab that part of the market, as the changes are mostly easy to make from an engineering standpoint. I would rather have this than a $45,000 BMW X3 or Q5. They're older designs and getting a little stale.

  20. Some competitors are quicker, some are not. The caddy wins on Styling (the Q5 is a feminine jellybean, the X3 is ok but proportions are too tall, the merc GLC is another jelly bean and the interior, though stylish, is impractical and has no storage up front) Handling - The X3 beats it. That's about it. The Q5 has numb steering, as does the XC60 and GLC. The XT5 makes sense in lower trim, it's ridiculous when loaded. But so are the Germans.

  21. 1. The Macan is a lifted hatchback and has far less utility and space. 2. The X3 is good, a better choice technically, but the styling is so-so and similarly equipped, it's not cheap either. Lux trim on the XT5 is cheaper than an X3 xdrive with leather, sunroof, xenons, and upgraded stereo. Pretty basic "lux" features. 3. The F Pace is superior. But it's a Jag. Ever talk to a Jag owner about reliability and hassles? They are underpricing it to launch their SUV line, so it's affordable now. But wait a couple years. Plus, you will pay MSRP for one, the XT5 is already discounted at lots. Tiny dealer network means you will likely have ONE choice to choose from, and if that isn't good, you're screwed. And forget about it if you live in a rural area. You will also wait months to get an F Pace right now, unless you want an oddball equipped version on the lot now.

  24. I drove one when they came out. Very nice. Skipping the tech stuff and artificial steering makes it a great affordable fast sport sedan. If they'd have given us what was fair on our trade instead of lowballing we'd have one. Went Volvo S60 R design for the same price and it is fine but doesn't look as good.

  25. Jaguar offers a better warranty and free maintenance than Land Rover. That may say something about expected reliability.

  26. It does not cost as much with similar equipment. The full size with a decent enough engine to move the weight will be $6000-$8000 more unless it's a leftover model with huge rebates, which doesn't really count, does it?

  27. 4888 lbs plus a marginal small offset test probably means it's safer for you than higher scoring but smaller vehicles. Remember, this is head-on collisions, where mass matters most. So buy that Hyundai Tucson (3500 lbs) at your own risk.

  32. 63 cu ft is the same as a Volvo XC60 and more than a BMW X3. This thing competes with honda CRV and Tucsons and Sportage. It's as impressive as any of the others.

  33. Why the fetish for auto interiors? As a driver your eyes should rarely see the interior. As long as its decent, which it is, I don't get the emphasis on interiors. And Yes, at $84K it's not good enough. But it starts at $70K well equipped.

  34. No, he's partly right. The Japanese central bank has devalued the yen since the 1990's in an effort to "stimulate" exports and their economy in general. Their national debt ratio is insane. This has the effect of making their exports relatively cheaper than they would be otherwise, at the cost of making imports to their country cost more. Therefore, they are "subsidizing" Toyota at the expense of everyday Japanese citizens whose wages now buy less than they otherwise would when it comes to international goods.

  36. Our family car gets to 60mph in 4.9 sec. This truck is NOT slow. It is plenty rewarding to drive empty and any more power just means trouble in a pickup.

  39. Yes, you can (with discounts) buy a $28,000 Colorado (2wd WT V6 crew cab) or a $43,000 one (ZR2). They're basically the same when it comes to doing work. A $28,000 full size pickup is either a vinyl seat regular cab or a deeply discounted year-end model.

  43. I would love to own a car with Lexus/Toyota reliability, but they just don't put it all together on any models. IS too small, not all that sporty, not as fast as some, GS is downright slow for 2018, and coupes are out.

  47. I enjoyed them on an F150 but live part time in Florida now and so far I haven't missed them. I think the way some seats 'breathe" may have something to do with it. And I'm a back sweater!

  48. Cars are higher than you remember, due to inflation and much higher content, I had to readjust my expectations myself, but yes, this is too much. They're about $8K off now, in early 2018. Much more reasonable.
