  1. The UK is the second largest member of NATO. Attlee-UK created NATO by getting the USA to stay on in Europe after WW2. There could be no EEC-EU without the umbrella of NATO which had more members than the EU until the 1990s when joining NATO was followed by joining the EU. So now the EU believes that it can replace NATO.
