It seems like Arch and a few others, that certain packages need signatures, and repositories get cleaned of packages that are either outdated or of questionable origin. The way politics is going in the Linux sphere, Linux could wind up in lock down mode as well.

@TempoLOOKING - I've had packages that wouldn't update because they didn't have a signature, or they were orphaned, or some other issue where they could not be verified. There's some similarities here, especially when there are teams and contributors of projects being banned in Linux/open source. You can laugh all you want, but there are serious division issues among Linux and Open Source, which the corporate world will more than happily take advantage of, and may very well have their hand in stirring the pot to escalate the situation.

Bill Gates was against software piracy. While he would have wanted everyone on windows, using windows software, he would very much want it so that he was making a profit from it. That, I think, is the bigger difference between now and then. The software giants don't care about profit and take for granted that people will just continue to use their software regardless, especially since it's all they can use if they sign in to the Apple or Microsoft environment. BIll Gates was trying to build the empire, and now it is here, and here to stay for the foreseeable future.
