@eyeborg3148 True, one reason why innovation sucks for the inventor, financially. The founder of modern DNA recombinant methods, how DNA is amplified, Nobel Prize winner Carry Mullis, got $10k for this multi-billion dollar invention. He said he made more money as a patent expert in patent litigation than from the actual invention.

This is great, all very well and good, but if IBM got patents on copper interconnect in the late 1990s you can bet they negotiated a license with TSMC to avoid a patent infringement lawsuit against TSMC. A brief search found no patent lawsuit against TSMC except by GlobalFoundries (one of their patents mentioned copper interconnect) in 2019, but I bet IBM did get some licensing agreement from TSMC.

@andersjjensen LOL thanks for the laughs. You can patent anything, even a math formulae (with hardware) and a method patent covers steps. BTW IBM gets like $2B a year (last I checked, like 10 years ago) from patent license fees. You don't think they approached TSMC? I doubt they haven't. Bye.

Correction: with TSMC, meaning TSMC probably, I guess, is paying IBM something to avoid infringing their copper interconnect patents.
