Given Russia's "defensive prowess", maybe Russia's best bet to hobble Ukraine is to cede enough territory in the south to Ukraine to make Ukraine roughly equal or just a bit bigger in size than Russia, and thereby stretch "Novo Ukraine's" borders sufficiently that it can't defend ITself either. Ukraine should propose that, as a lark, and as a basis for a mutual non-aggression pact.
