The one and only time I tried to cross deep water at speed, I thermally cracked my distributer cap (1981 Escort) and barely coasted back to solid road. At least I didn't hydro-lock it.

@Stealth86651 There is another factor with the 'barely wet' roads. In areas that don't get frequent rain, the road surface builds up oils, greases, and tire rubber particles from all the vehicles using the road. When the very light rain happens, all that slick residue floats, forming a slick layer on tip of the water. There can be fewer loss-of-traction events if the rain is heavier (until you dance into hydroplaning) or after the light rain has had time to clear the car residue.
