I've run into a shop, okay, a Meineke, that "inspected" things I did not ask them to work on and they threatened to call the police who would "ticket me and impound my vehicle" if I didn't get those things fixed. I told the guy that I came in for an exhaust pipe and muffler, and there was absolutely NO reason for the mechanic to even touch my wheels to inspect my brakes. I then told him to go ahead and call the cops. Funny, they dropped the issue, installed the parts I had asked for, at the price they advertised, and I drove away. I've never been back to a Meineke since.

The shop I get work done at has so far been honest about "upsell". They have declined to change air filters when they don't need it, even though they could easily just change it and never tell me it wasn't dirty. They always show the part (or a picture of it) that need replacement and are willing to let customers see it in situ. Last year, they told me my wipers were pretty worn, but I should go to WalMart instead of paying the price they would have to charge.

I live in New England. Weak batteries reveal themselves pretty easily for about 1/3 to 1/2 of the year.

@Digidoc316 I have declined to have a shop change a weak battery. Then I went to the auto parts store, got a decent battery and installed it. I paid less for the battery than the shop would have charged me, and we both shopped at the same parts store, and that didn't count the labor.
