Referendum is not the right thing to do. I want less migration but the consequences of fewer cheap labour migrants need to be considered and planned for. I don't think that a referendum will bring together cohesive and comprehensive plans to deal with the consequences of reduced migration. That is why we have political parties to put together plans. Likely consequences include: having to retire later because we need to maintain a people in the workforce to make up for those not coming, increased investment in tech to replace cheap migrants doing jobs at a price lower than machinery, need to increase native UK citizens birth rates (incentives needed?), etc...a referendum doesn't cut it.
