  2. My father was onboard HMS Dorsetshire from June 1940 until 1pm on Easter Sunday April 5th 1942 when she was sunk by Val dive bombers from Zuikaku during the Indian Ocean Raid. After the sinking of HMS Dorsetshire and Cornwall there were 1100 survivors in the water from a combined complement of just over 1500 men. Dad recalled that after the sinkings, one or two of the dive bombers machine gunned the men in the water, but that he clearly saw one of the bombers sweep past at low level with its hood open and a heavily moustachioed pilot who waved to the men in the water before departing. He always said that if the Japanese spotter aircraft from the cruiser "Tone" had been able to shadow the two RN cruisers for another 2 hours, and the Val bombers has been able to follow, that they would have wiped out the RN Eastern Fleet "force A" battleships the cruisers were meant to be rendezvousing with and caused MAJOR knock on problems for the RN across the globe.
