  1. My uncle, who passed away 2 years ago was a member of the RAE (Royal Aircraft Estabishment) at Farnborough in Kent, UK during WW2. He was one day ordered to stabilise a Spitfire V that was having its guns (including 2 x 20mm hispano MkII cannons) synchronised. He said that after the firing had concluded he collapsed and when he came round minutes later in the first aid hut, he had blood pouring from both his ears. He had to wait until 1987 to receive a disability pension from the UK Govt for the damaged hearing he suffered with all of his adult life as a result of the incident. I imagine this would cause similar damage.

The whole problem is based on a sad realisation of your own mortality, and the fact that basically what has been a MAJOR part of an individual's "raison d'etre", is NOT necessarily of the same importance to someone else. It's the fact that what YOU and your passions have assembled over the course of a lifetime will not be kept as a single entity and inevitably your life's work will be disassembled back into its original constituent parts that fills some people with unbearable existential pain. Read Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "Ozymandias" to see the process illustrated beautifully.
