Hmm, gut punch moments? Well, Eastern Front is what comes to my mind. One particular moment was about a year ago. I got into a paid Erasmus program which would allow me to study in Petersburg for 3 weeks and I took that opportunity more for cheap tourism. It was august to September, so about the time The Great Siege of Leningrad started as far as I remember. In the hallway of the Uni, a soldier was standing still with a lit candle in the hand with a sign saying something 'in the memory of the great Siege of Leningrad'. Considering I am from one of those countries that invaded Russia in 1941, it felt really horrible. I mean, most of the times I hear the Russian WW2 manifestations being dismissed just as pure propaganda, but seing such a sad picture in an otherwise joyful period (it was the start of the university year) can really give you a punch.
