@eheboi9278 That's a good question. I think that modern games use more CPU for physics (particle physics and when you fight someone). Also, CPU is used to "feed" videocard all the instructions. Weak CPU will bottleneck game a lot. NPCs AI didn't get smarter. Physics didn't get better (except some unique cases). It's not a technical problem - more like a bad prioritization from game publishers (make a game beautiful - other things are not important). Look at Red Dead Redeption 2 for great details while looking good! Same with Kingdom Come 2. Same with Breath of the Wild. P. S. - Exclude particles from this - they are calculated on a GPU for modern games!

Ever played Gothic 2? ;-)
2
@Beaverof Those objects just don't participate in any physics calculations. Modders could add that (then we should pay modders instead of lazy devs ;-) )
2
Try some great indie games ;-) There are still good modern games!
2
Indies: 30% graphics, 50% gameplay, 20% new ideas
2
@Benny_512 It's fine - don't buy it then! In the first few days after release you can't really tell is game buggy? Will it be fixed at all? But after an year - you can! ;-)
2
@Benny_512 100% agree!
2
Then try some great indie games ;-)
1
Indie games are still oldschool tho ;-)
1
Awoven is Obsidian... Looks like they are not what they were
1
@paulw5039 We still have that today - it's indie games ;-)
1
Creation Engine has a ton of problems xD Bethesda back then cared about something more than money ;-)
1
* Physics are calculated on a CPU * You would need only around 4060 and 16 Gb of RAM to play this game I get your point but let's not overblown it ;-)
1
Gothic 2 did that MUCH better ;-)
1
Same happened when Oblivion came out (compared to Morrowind)
1
@Auxius. Except some games DO have great details! Like Breath of the Wild, Kingdom Come 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2 ;-)
1
@realwolfingen8896 True xD
1
Never tried any new good indie games?
1
Really? Ever played Gothic 2? ;-)
1
@Shizlgizl No, Gothic is more famous for it's atmosphere and AI routines. Also, it's not hand holdy - you can die because you went "in the bad neighborhood" xD
1
Check out some great AA and indie games! ;-)
1
But that's a wrong tradeoff! You could just disable physics in a sphere around player and have physics interactions in a BIG world!
1
If you would played Gothic 2 you would be less impressed with Oblivion AI ;-)
1
Gothic 2 has a better NPCs routine and AI ;-)
1
Try: * "Chivalry" and "Modhau" * Kingdom Come 1 and 2 * Shadow Warrior (2013) - enable blade full control * Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
1
Only AAA ones ;-)
1
Applies only for AAA ;-)
1
100% true!
1
Not all - just AAA
1
They do! Just not AAA ;-)
1
It's still a thing for indie developers! People are just playing the wrong games ;-)
1
Yep!
1
That's why wise people are buying games after 3-12 months after release ;-)
1
Only AAA devs ;-) AAA is not the whole gaming!
1
@Komorur 100% agree! Most indie games are pretty shit but there are a few great games that became new classics! It's Wild West in indie space xD But there are MUCH less paid reviews!
1
No Man's Sky wants to say Hi! ;-)
1
Because they don't know about indie games ;-)
1
There are good games today - they are not AAA of course
1
It's pretty expensive and time consuming. Sadly. You could make 5 Call of Duty'es for the same time
