I agree with the equality before the law argument. The king was the foundation of law and the ultimate arbiter but those kings were not Anglo-Saxon, they were Norman kings and their descendents. Common law is the famous Anglo-Saxon law, but it was found to be insufficient. Being based on template cases called writs, the common law courts would not accept cases that were not instances of a template case. The problem was compounded when the courts stopped creating new templates, and instead rejected cases, thus the defendant won by default. People started to appeal to the king, as the font of all justice, to listen to their specific case and judge it on its own merits. After demand exceeded the kings capacity, he delegated the role to the chancellor. Chancery law must override common law because if the specific does not override the general, then you only have general (common) law.
