What was really odd was the Army had two 7.7x58mm cartridges; one semi-rimmed and one rimless. The Type 99 rimless round was used in ground guns. While the older Type 89 semi-rimless was used mostly in aircraft guns. The Type 89 and Type 99 rounds were not generally interchangeable. Except for in the Type 92 Nambu heavy machine gun, which could use either. 7.7x56mmR was just .303 British in metric. The Navy used it in aircraft machine guns until 1945.

I think the Type 96 LMG remained in production until 1943. If only to maintain a common ammunition supply in units equiped with Type 38 rifles.
