The compensator caught on things, and funnelled dirt into the barrel. And the woodwork was unnecessary weight. So the former were sawn off and scrapped. And the later was replaced once the metal cover was available as a part. Most of the wood grips would have been burnt, to supplement coal ratios.

The barrel jacket. Remember you are only supposed to firing short bursts, or single shots. And only at short range. In assaults or self defence.

Singer was an American company. But the factory, tooling, and workforce used were all in the UK. So Britain, literally, did have the manufacturing capacity.

Sten magazines do fit in Mk.I and Mk.II pouches if you lay them diagonally. (Two in each pouch). The Mk.III pouch was introduced in 1944 and you could stack 5 or 6 vertically in each.

Reduces weight. And few soldiers used the lower receiver as a grip, anyway.

Making the Sten shorter and lighter improved handling. So it was a worthwhile modification in itself. And the work could be done by batallion level armourers. Also, most Sten Mk.I and I* were used in the UK, for home defence.

A napkin? In a pub! Surely it would have been a beer mat or the back of envelope?

In theory Sten, Lanchester, MP 28, MP 38, and MP 40 magazines were interchangeable. But the Germans used metric and the British used Imperial measures. And production tolerances varied. So often the magazines would'nt interchange. It's not something you would try, except in desperation.
