Diesen: “industrial policy which may not be fair”….Diesen may be a solid historian of politics, but an understanding of economic history is thornier. Is “industrial policy” a new invention? In the nineteenth century, the west (US, UK, Germany) pursued industrial policy. Does it pursue it now? Is it prevented from pursuing it now? The more serious question is: can the west — without its own natural resources, manufacturing, engineers, supply chain — even pursue industrial policy? Professors Hudson and Werner, among others, have insights into this.

“The logic of war” is probably an oxymoron. War happens because at least one side desires it. This is the Schopenhauerian “will”. Nassim Taleb (“Black Swan”) has stated almost a “natural law”: financial disasters (black swan events) happen because there hasn’t been a more limited failure which is a premonition of a cataclysm — and causes parties to “think” (ie logically) about the consequences of continued behavior. This may be true in geopolitics. If so, a confrontation between the west and rest of the world (such as NATO adamantly desires) may be the only possible outcome with favorable longer term prospects. The west is very confident about its military capabilities. As seen in Ukraine and Israel, this confidence can meet reality, the anti-confidence missile. “Be careful of what you wish for”.

Pascal: “I hope the rest of the world doesn’t want revenge” — a perceptive comment. Part of the answer arises from an understanding of the history of ideas and their dissemination in culture. An example which struck me was the agreement of the Soviet Union to agree to the withdrawal of their military from Eastern Europe, and the agreement to allow, the two Germanies to unite.
