  1. It’s fairly obvious if you understand basic math. The working class has very little left to invest after covering basic expenses (they’re wage earners). The financial elite has surplus capital far in excess of its ability to consume — this is invested. Isn’t it obvious their wealth will increase — even if we don’t mention their tax sheltering through the IRS Code and offshore tax havens.

  2. Prof Desai has gotten carried away with her metaphors — finance capitalism is not the senescence of capitalism — it’s the apotheosis of capitalism. While wealthy families and royalty have always maintained their assets across multiple generations — finance capitalism is the spiraling of returns to avarice through usury, hypothecation of assets, and the capture of government tax policy. All this was made possible by a central banking system as manifested by the federal reserve system (1913) in the US.
