  9. An informative and objective video. The invention of the battery is attributed to the Italian Alessandro Volta, working 200 years ago. Basic battery and electrode chemistry has been known for a century. The potential role of lithium, nickel hydride and other compounds in anode design has been known for the last fifty years — most of the early invention was done in the West and picked up by east Asia. China was the last to the game. So why is Europe so far behind in battery technology when it was a European invention? Certainly the explanation is complex. But the failures of senior management at European automakers are a major factor. Do I need to remind viewers of the Volkswagen diesel emissions fraud which affected a half a million vehicles worldwide? Six years of atmospheric diesel engine pollution escaped detection by the defeat devices installed in diesel engines made by the “pride of German industry”. It would have continued had not the EPA of the US uncovered the crime. The total cost to Volkswagen was some $33 billion. Perhaps some of that money could have been used for technology research? As it stands, most of the German/European automakers are uncompetitive in global markets. Having gorged on the Chinese market where the German sedan was the ultimate in status, this reign is over. It’s happening now — and it will be even more grim if China expands its categories of luxury tax against imported products (cars are not included at present).

There will be a few surprises to come (I have colleagues in material science). If Deng Xiaoping grasped the importance of rare earths some 40 years ago, then its safe to say that China remains years ahead of the west in the comprehensive understanding of critical minerals — from extraction, refining, production and to research into advanced applications.

In 2023, Zoltan Pozsar observed that $2 trillion of German manufacturing was based on $200 million of Russian gas, leverage of 10:1. On the one hand, it’s clear that German politicians are fully in alignment with the de-industrialization of the country, and welcome the hollowing out of companies to the US and China. However, the auto industry shows that it is seriously underinvested in research and its cost structure is uncompetitive. These structural problems are deep seated and will not be solved quickly — particularly if the country follows the advice of the US.

Its purpose is to encourage US investment mining and processing in Africa (most unlikely as the US is disinterested even in its own backyard, Latin America). The author details the increasing market share of the Chinese — but shows no evidence of a ‘dangerous’ market squeeze in commodities — quite the opposite, the west is terrified that China will continue to effectively lower the price of finished goods, eroding the excess profits that the big corporations have made through the years.

The message: you are less than “barbarian”, less than an honorable representative of the poorest people or tribe. The complete uncoupling will now take place under Trump II. As he can’t change anything about the structure of US healthcare and education (high cost, inferior results), it will be restoring jobs that’s the test. If he can’t, he will build up the military and focus on external threats, as all presidents in this millenium have done. Hope for peace, be prepared for war.
