Strictly speaking, if they did detect the drones, but had no surface to air missile batteries to hand the information to, all they could do was sit and watch the blip on the screen turn into a loud bang outside the control building. This was the case with the A-50 AWACS plane that got shot down over the Sea of Azov. The flight tracker shows erratic maneuvers for 90 seconds before the plane vanished. They knew it was coming. They knew it was closing in on them. And all they could do was yank the stick feverishly in all directions and pray worthless prayers.

  3. These radars are so far into Russia that the radar horizon is 15km or more above Ukraine. They're designed to detect ballistic missiles that reach the edge of space. The only reason to target them is to cripple Russia's ability to see long range ballistic missiles. They MIGHT be able to see ATACMS, as those go up as high as 50km, but I don't think these radars were designed with something that small in mind. Which is, apparently, also why Jake is scratching his head: If these can only see ICBMs, then what's the point?

  5. Scholz has actually come around and published a joint statement with Macron. There's an article in Deutsche Welle from about 5 hours ago. He is still vague and tip-toe-ish in the statement, but it's a far cry from his first nonsense.
