Many set ridiculously high prerequisite requirements well beyond what is actually needed. My friend's daughter once applied for a part time job at a major car rental agency. She was told she needed at least an under grad degree.... this was to be a counter clerk serving people renting cars mind you, not an executive. She was in fact, attending university in her third year but all they would offer her was a job cleaning the cars. I've since heard that this same company now expects their prospects to come armed with a graduate degree.... to be a goddam rental clerk!!! And it's these very same companies who'll bellyache to the government unendingly that there's a worker shortage.

@badluck5647 That's a very standard but also very lame excuse. There's a very easy way around that. It's called a contract and they too are quite common. I've signed several of them myself.

@badluck5647 I suppose you could look at it that way but it's kind of like saying that it's pointless to lock your doors because the thieves will just break in anyway. If you are smart enough about 1) who you select to begin with and 2) how you word the contracts, they can still be pretty effective. Not perfect but still an important tool in the box. Not everybody has the desire nor the ability to just pick up and move and if you demonstrate a level of commitment to your employees there's a good chance the gesture might just be reciprocated.

@jamesavilez9504 Well, there is no shortage of those kinds of employers too but they tend to be different from the ones who expect the stars from their applicants. At least in my experience.
