  1. In my opinion, the greatest threat to western unity is time. Russia cannot "win" much more than significant portions of the Donbas at this point, and they know it. Military action on their part has failed to divide and weaken the western alliances but the fact remains that most of that unity has to this point, only manifested itself in talk. There has been little real action. So the most effective way for Russia to move forward would be to declare a ceasefire, allow the whole thing to fade from the front pages while calling for negotiations. This is still the west's huge weakness... they are simply unable to say no to such things because it gets them off the hook from having to make any really tough decisions. Europe in particular, is desperate for a return to the status quo and will practically sign away their own borders to achieve it and if they won't now, Putin knows that all their talk of getting off Russian energy is cheap and empty in high summer but when winter arrives, it'll be a whole different matter. Excuses for resuming energy trading will be thicker than hardwood and Putin will happily lap up all that cash to rebuild his army for another go-around in a year or two.
