  1. As former French colonies, and also since "independence", they were exploited by France. Now they'll be exploited by their own generals on behalf of Russia. Same prison, different warden.

  3. You are indeed correct. Russia was every bit as much a colonial empire as any of the other big European powers and, to a considerable degree, they still are today. It's just that most of their colonies just happened to be adjacent to their own territory instead of across the seas. The whole of NE Asia is conquered territory. @considerthis9007
