A comprehensive data protection law is impossible for 2 reasons - 1) it would require congress to work together when all they want to do is investigate each other and 2) such a law would (presumably) cover all companies and entities which would be very problematic since there are all kinds of government agencies that love scooping up as much data as possible and no end of companies who wish to do the same and are big donors. It would also be predicated on the silly, naive assumption that the government gives a f*ck about us and our privacy which is laughable. So we might as well forget about that idea. As for what kind of country and what kind of society we are becoming, I'd say it's a bit late to be having that kind of conversation. I think we've passed the point of no return on that matter quite some time back.
